There should be a rubber boot covering the back of the headlight where the wire goes into.
When you remove the wire the boot will pull off and there is a spring clip behind it, The spring holds the bulb in place.
Push in and move Down, If you look it is in a hook to hold it.

there is a retaining ring that holds the buld into the headlight assembly. to replace the bulb, first disconnect the connector from the old bulb. There is a tab on the top of the connector that pushes backward (toward the engine) and with the tab released and held back you can push the connector downward to remove it. On many of the older cars you need to use a flat blade screwdriver to push the sides of the connector downward because the connectors are stuck on from years of dirt and grime buildup.
with the connector removed you can reach the retaining ring that holds the bulb in. the retainer ring is a circular ring that locks the bulb in place. to release the bulb you turn the retaining ring counter-clockwise (when looking at the ring from the engine). The ring should turn between 1/8 and 1/4 turn before the bulb will pull out. The bulb comes out straight rearward.
you replace the bulb by reversing the above steps. As a caution, don't handle the bulb by the glass; only touch the plastic housing or you'll cause the new bulb to fail prematurely.
you may have to remove the power steering reservoir or the air inlet tube on some models (the thing that looks like a periscope on the right side--it just pulls straight up and out) to get to the bulb if you have big hands, but it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Take the wheel off the side with the burnt out bulb. Next pull the 6 plastic rivets out of the front fender well shield. Take the screw out of the shield above the 3 rivets along the inside of the fender edge, Pull the shield back starting at the top where it's tucked under the back portion of the liner shield. Unscrew the top plastic cover, twist the connector counter clockwise and pull it off the bulb. Then unclip the bulb and pull the bulb out noting the groove position for reinstalling the new bulb in the housing.
There is nothing simple about your bulb change. The dealer price of the bulb is around $245.00.

If you rotate that CCW the socket should pull out with the bulb in it. Remember don't touch the new bulb with bare hands, if you do, clean it with rubbing alcohol. pull out the headlight and disconnect the wiring hrness/plug.

You are on the right track. You remove the bulb from inside by twisting the mount. Just follow the wires to the bulb. Be careful not to touch the glass of the new bulb since oils on your hand can cause it to explode; they get that hot.

Under the hood you reach under the front cowling behind the headlight and gently pull the connector off (don't pry up on it or it will break) and then twist the ring holding it in and your set. Unbolting the battery on the drivers side and moving it in helps also. Just don't unbolt anything on the headlight or alignment can be off.

There's a single screw on bottom /center of the headlight case on the Rectangle lights.
On the Round lights,,,
there's 2 screws positioned at about 4 O'clock and 8 o'clock,,on the headlight case.
On either type light,,,
remove those screws,
then pull headlight out at the bottom first.
Its a sort of Tilt motion,,,tilts out at bottom.
The Upper edge of the Beam Assembly %26quot;hooks%26quot; into the upper area of the headlight case.
You will probably have to Pry the light's Chrome Trim Ring from the Case to get it started
Be careful,,,it all come loose rather suddenly and will fall free.
To RE-INSTALL,,,,Look at the detail of the Inside of the Case's Upper Head,,,you can see how it hooks in.
Hook it in to Upper Edge first,,,then %26quot;swing %26quot; the bottom edge in towards the case.
The assembly Faintly %26quot;snaps%26quot; into place.
Re-install the screw/screws.
TRY to get screw holes lined up before snapping beam assy into place.
Tuff %26amp; tedious to get it positioned exactly right ,,,usually.
You should be able to turn the beam assy on the Round Light(cb750's) if needed.
The Rectangle 550/650 lights %26quot;naturally%26quot; go into position.

(The 450 Nighthawks have a sealed beam unit vs the separate bulb/beam assy of the bigger bikes.

For the driver's side headlight; I found that lifting up on the power steering reservoir until it became unlatched from it's mounting and separated from it's bracket, gave me much more room to get that damn headlight connector off and a new bulb in without tainting the bulb.

For the driver's side headlight; I found that lifting up on the power steering reservoir until it became unlatched from it's mounting and separated from it's bracket, gave me much more room to get that damn headlight connector off and a new bulb in without tainting the bulb.

I am trying to help a friend of mine change his headlight bulb (just the bulb, not the whole assembly). He has a 1997 Olds Cutlass, and we're not sure how to gain access to the bulb. The headlight assembly has metal plates behind it, so we don't have direct access to the bulb. I've never come across a vehicle that doesn't offere easy direct access to the bulb. I'm thinking we're going to have to pull the whole headlight assembly forward in order to get to the bulb, but we're not exactly sure how.

If you replaced the bulb and it still dont work, try replacing the plug and harness.

To change the headlight bulbs, you need to disconnect the multiplug on the back of the bulb first. These just pull off but are ridiculously tight (don't pull too hard because the headlamp mounting clip will shatter and the headlamp will flop about). Try to hold the bulb itself while you pull this off (squeeze the bulb through the rubber cover surrounding it). Once disconnected, remove the rubber cover.
The last step is to move the wire clip that holds the bulb. You should see two bent wire rings above the bulb, push in and to one side to unhook and then the bulb drops out. The bulb will only go in one way so make sure the locating tags are the right way up (large tag to the top). Don't touch the glass of the bulb with your fingers as it will shorten its life.

It`s a long job, all done from the front of the car. There is no access from under the bonnet to the back of the light housings
You need to take off various bits of trim including the dummy side light/indicator. Take off the trim around the light, this will give you access to the screws that hold the light unit in place. Carefully remove the %26quot;bezel%26quot; as it`s called and the light unit will be free to take out. Take care with the lead to the side light , the main bulb is held in place by the %26quot;usual%26quot; spring clip. When you put it all back together make sure that the lights work BEFORE you put all the trim back, it`s very easy to dislodge the side light bulb!
The procedure is covered in detail in the Haynes manual.
I`ve done this job several times, and it still takes me at least 30 mins to do !
